A friend of mine is joining the Navy, and for his graduation his family presented him with this (actually rather cool) cake. I noticed two small issues with it. One, the phrase is actually “Anchors Aweigh” not “Anchors Away”, but I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that was a conscious play on words since he is leaving. The second is that there is an apostrophe in “Anchors”, indicating that the Away belongs to the Anchor. And that one I’m almost sure is wrong.
EDIT: I’m going to go ahead an assume they meant “Anchor is Away” and that this was an intentional move.

At least “Congratulations” below it looks right. A few years ago my coworkers got me a cake when my daughter was born, but the baker forgot to cross the T’s so it said “Congralulalions”.

Yes it is wrong. Also, allow me to link to Cake Wrecks for the second time tonight: http://www.cakewrecks.com/home/tag/creat…

You are correct http://www.navy.mil/navydata/nav_l… . Fun fact, it’s basically a drinking song about getting hammered the night before going out to sea. Also, recruits at Great Lakes Recruit Training Center were required to sing it when they marched under a specific bridge on base.

Correct on both counts.
But.. It’s one of those things that is worth passing over.

Unnecessary and incorrect apostrophes piss me off. My probable ADHD goes “squirrel!” at grammatical or spelling mistakes which throws me off and usually leads to me having to reread the block of text over a few times before I retain anything in it. Total time waste.

Yeah, I sure as hell do not plan on saying anything.

Sure it’s possessive and not a contraction? Maybe they called “anchors aweigh” ten minutes ago, so now the anchor is away.

There should be no apostrophe. And, it should be “aweigh,” unless you want to go with the pun.

This is my number one pet peeve. It doesn’t help that it’s also the most common one. Adding an apostrophe s does not make a word plural. It makes it possessive. Anybody got eye bleach?

Couldn’t it refer to “(the) anchor is away”?

Could be a contraction for Anchor Is Away, I suppose? In any case, if it didn’t say exactly Anchors Aweigh then it’s wrong.

It could. Still not sure it’s what they meant, but maybe.

With the apostrophe it would have to.
